I love Valentines day. And it is coming right up! Even when I celebrate as a singleton, I have so much love and happiness in my life. In my personal life, I have a fantastic family and a great group of friends, whom I love and adore and who love and adore me. I am so grateful for every bit. I don't believe in limiting the celebration of Valentine's day to honoring only romantic love... Let's celebrate love of all kinds.

So on that note I want to celebrate all of you... because I love and appreciate you. I love those of you who pay attention to my 140 character musings on Twitter.. or like The Cozy Project Facebook updates and photos. I love all of you who read my blog or favorite my items on Etsy. I feel loved and appreciated by all of you and I am grateful. To all who have given me a thumbs up in some big or small way since I have started this particular handmade adventure: THANK YOU! I got cancelled from my day job today... I am so excited I can't go back to sleep! It feels like getting a snow day or skipping class!

There are lists in my head of all the productive and fun things I could do with the ten hours that just became mine. I think my problem will be deciding which ones to choose!

When I am working from home I like to listen to Pandora. My favorite station lately has been Gotye. I heard "Someone that I used to know" on the radio sometime this winter and added that station to my list. It is like that station was made for me and plays a lot of my favorite tunes...

Sunday (in the midst of a bit of internet "research") I finally watched the video for this song. It's amazing.

Who is all caught up from the chaos of the Holidays?

Not me!

With a busy holiday season on Etsy and four different family gatherings, plus New Years and some work and friend events at the beginning of this month, I am just starting to find time to get things organized and revamp my craft space and my shop.

I have a long weekend coming up... FOUR whole days free!! I am super excited for some pajama time and some productive time. I am in desperate need of organizing and purging and maybe even some crafty time and some in the kitchen time. It seems like a great time for baking if you ask me!

Hope you are are enjoying the new year!! 2012 will be great I am sure!!

Holiday gift giving...

I know it is early, but for us crafty handmade peeps... Christmas entails more than a last minute run to the mall. I have been brainstorming ideas for handmade gifts since August. After too many Christmas's working in a large toy store... I made a promise to myself not to ruin the holidays by spending all my time shopping in retail stores. I love making things and giving something I created with my own two hands only makes giving a gift that much more special.

So for the last ten years... most of my gifts have been handmade. Of course there has been a plethora of crocheted gifts. Last year I made hats and fingerless gloves... One year not so long ago everyone got afghans. YES I MADE 27 BLANKETS. It was just after a move, I was new in town and my only friends were Paula, Simon, Randy, and Ryan. Oh and also Justin and Kelly.

I am still trying to decide what I will make this year. None of my ideas have stuck yet...

Our usual family routine at Halloween involves my nephew picking a theme and then we all dress up together and go out trick or treating as his accessories!

Since I am on vacation it isn't happening this year... And maybe also because my niece is getting old enough to decide she wants to be Strawberry Shortcake instead of someone from Harry Potter. I was really looking forward to my Professor Trelawney costume until I realized it conflicted with this trip.

I haven't touched yarn in three days! What? I did bring some... thinking I could get some work done on the plane... But I just happened to sit next to cute boys on both of my flights... So I decided to keep the grandma routine to a minimum.

I am taking a little trip to the other side of the country... It's lovely here. I love New York! We got in on Saturday and landed in the middle of the snowstorm. It was cold, but oh so pretty.

So October has proven to be quite a busy month.

It was my birthday... so I was required to spend a lot of time running around in this:

My friends are super and I am grateful to have had lots of love and attention this month in honor of my birth!

There have also been significant changes rolling out at my day job that have required lots of time and attention from my brain.

And... one of the coolest things this month: Etsy posted a link to one of my cozies on their Facebook page.

It brought quite a bit of traffic to my shop. I am so grateful and the influx of orders has kept me quite busy! I am currently on vacation from the day job.... I wasn't sure about taking the extra week before my trip to NYC but it was completely meant to be. I am so glad that I have had the time to fill all the orders and not get behind. It's been a lot of fun. So if you are wondering where I have been.. I have been on my couch with yarn streaming Netflix!

Crazy 8's!

This summer I was asked to complete a custom bulk order. Heather asked for 8 cozies with 8's on them. I was totally curious but went about creating some cute cozies for her. I finally asked and she told me that she had a group of 8 friends that she has known for almost 40 years. They get together periodically and she wanted to bring something that would be used and remind them of each other and their friendship.

She just sent me a pic of their table setting. Judging by that, it looks like they had a great time. I am glad they enjoyed their custom cozies and some super great quality time with friends!

This dreary weather makes me want to drink tea (or something warm and cozy) from noon to night! My adorable red Kitchenaid tea pot has never felt so much love!!! One of my favorite times of day is after dinner, right before bed, we put water in the pot, and wait for that whistle.

I live in the fantastic city of Portland, Or. There is a lovely park just a short walk from my apartment and I have been there a few times in the last few weeks to eat lunch in the coolness of the shade under the trees. My friend Chelsea took some lovely photos and posted about our trip here.

Last week my friend Eva and I went with a mason jar of wine and sandwiches made with veggies and fresh, just made in my kitchen pesto!

We walked past lovely houses with fantastically unique and pretty yards....
These roses were beautiful AND smelled amazing!

And this drawing on the sidewalk articulated exactly how I felt about the day!

I am tired of lugging around my wallet and my huge iPhone case.... I am not a construction worker, just slightly paranoid and I brought the super durable one that would protect my phone even if I dropped it off the 30th floor of a building. I want to find a pouch or pocket or case that I can use to carry my phone, bank cards, a business card or two, some cash and a lip gloss.

Does anyone have a suggestion? I have been looking for a month.

Last week I heard a bit of twitter about The Shins playing here in Portland at The Doug Fir. They are one of my favs and to see them at one of my fav venues was too exciting to pass up!! So I rushed over to buy tickets and thank goodness, cause they sold out quickly.

Super Rad PDX; My First real craft show!

Oh Super Rad...

I participated in my first real craft show a few weeks back! I was up until 2am every night the entire week before hand. It was a lot of work. But it was my first time and I wanted to be ready for ANYTHING. I read the section in my Handmade Marketplace book and I read these two posts I had seen on INDIE FIXX : Post #1 and Post #2 to help give me an idea about what I should do to prepare.

Here is what I did to get ready:

I created lots of product and affixed them with the official Cozy Project label
I made copies of care instruction cards (that I forgot to put my website on!! Next batch!)
I made magnets to give away in my booth..
I printed out my ad to create a sign to display.
I got Cash! I was working at my day job the day before and I completely spaced going to the bank. I ran around Sunday morning trying to get as many 1's and 5's as I could. (And in the end I had way too much cash. But better safe than sorry!)
I gathered supplies like tape, scissors, string, tablecloth, a bowl for business cards, cups for display
I cut hearts out of cardboard and strung them together with recycled cotton yarn and made a garland to hang in my booth.
I drank a 6-er of PBR to use for display as beer coozies... (I thought the PBR might woo some hipsters. I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Seriously don't tell. It's embarrassing.)

Oh my.. what else did I do.. it felt like there were a billion things.

The night before the big day, my super cool friends, Lizzy , Chelsea , and Ansley brought me over dinner and hung out while I finished some last minute tasks and kept me company. Ansley even helped me finish the last minute bits on my magnets. It was a great way to spend the night before... it distracted me from thinking and worrying too much and it was so great to feel supported!!

And then came the rains. You all know it is July, right? Mother Nature doesn't seem to!! Could you tell her please? TORRENTIAL downpour. For hours!! I was sooo so sad. (I know all of you in the midst of record heatwaves might have been a little jealous... I would have traded you for 100 degrees. And that offer still stands. You just let me know!) Did I mention the show was outdoors?

The show started at 1 pm on Sunday and we toughed it out. My super friend Desi came along as my sidekick and we arrived at the location (Portland Nursery) around 11 am. We pitched our tent and moved the tables into the middle. Luckily I had brought a towel... which was dripping wet by the time I had wiped things down for the 18th time. When the show opened at 1 there were a few folks wandering in with raincoats and umbrellas. It continues to rain at least lightly until about 2:30. People came out anyway. Bless you Oregonians!! You are in my heart! I suppose the live music and offer of FREE Hopworks beer helped reel a few people in! At some point the sun did finally come out and grace us with its presence.

Despite the weather it was a great show! I made enough money to cover my booth fee and then some. In total I sold about 20 cozies. Not too shabby considering the conditions. I figured out that I could sell at craft fairs for my Etsy prices. I had a bad experience at a previous Street fair, so I was glad to know that was possible. I got to practice using my Square card reader, I handed out business cards, and I got some new Facebook fans. I also met some SUPER RAD crafty peeps. I deem the event a complete success!

I was so busy that I didn't take any pics of my booth. Here's a lovely pic though of my gifty magnets!

I put some new items up in the shop today. Also straightened and organized all my listings! Phew! I love the new streamlined process for listing items on Etsy.

It's been a busy couple of weeks at the ole day job. Things are starting to simmer down and I am really looking forward to spending some quality time updating my Etsy shop.

My alarm went off this morning and I woke up to Florence and the Machine. Mmmm! The Dog Days ARE over! You have prob seen this... But it still makes me feel cheery! Check out this vid!

Some new yarn.

I love yarn. (You aren't surpised are you?) I love all the bright colors and textures. I love wandering through yarn shops looking at all the gorgeous skeins. I love the thick chunky stuff that varies in color and is not completely consistent in texture. I get a little sad that I am allergic to wool. Looking is great and all, but I would love to get my hands on some of that stuff. Admittedly, I have felt a bit left out... but on my last trip to Twisted I decided to ask for some help. (I don't know why I have such an aversion to that concept.) I explained my situation and the super staff there pointed out multiple options for me! I chose the Berroco . It's nylon and acrylic and really really soft! And I love love love the colors I chose. I love how they look together! I have been obsessed with aqua and red lately.

At the shop they have a super selection of notions and I picked out some fantastic wooden buttons!! I am in love with both of these buttons and I might have gone back and bought all the red ones they had!

ADDENDUM! I can't believe I almost forgot to tell you that when I went back in to wipe them out of red wooden buttons there was a man who walked in as I was paying for my things and when asked if he could be helped, he replied, "My wife asked me to stop on the way home and pick her up some yarn." My thought was, which I think I kept in my head, "UH. Yah, he is definitely going to need some help." But the lovely girls didn't even skip and beat or furrow their brow... and simply just went about helping him find the right kind of yarn. Super!

Creating the blog.. an adventure in two dimensions.

I am so much more of a tactile person... I just spent over an hour trying to figure out how to make this thing look put together or maybe even pretty. I just wanted to reach my hands in and move things around. No such luck. I am restricted to access via keyboard.

I am Jen. Ringleader of The Cozy Project. I always find a creative outlet. I drew a lot in high school, made or tailored clothes after that... The first year I moved to Portland I didn't know anyone but my roommate at the time... so I watched a lot of tele and made afghans to give my family and friends at Christmas. Glad I know people now, but it still makes me happy when I see those blankets in use and keeping people I love feeling cozy.

Speaking of cozy.. I made my first one last year for Boss's day. Everyone at worked loved them and wanted one of their own... and thus it became a project! I love them too. Aside from the eco benefits of not using a cardboard sleeve, they are a bright shiny little thing to provide perk, while awaiting the caffeine to find its way into the bloodstream!
